Chapter 16

Mandy pressed herself against the disgusting corridor wall in the junction as Major Pierce directed Lieutenants Cross and Serizawa on what to do next. Cross would take his squad up the left part of the junction to capture the bridge and secure Sitri’s personal quarters, while Serizawa was to take hers down to the right to secure a critical junction that would cut the rest of the ship off from engineering and weapons systems.

The doctor did her best to ignore the comms chatter coming from outside as the tide of battle continued to shift. With the element of surprise now gone, the Alliance was struggling to hold the advantage against the Demons and Ghenzul.

She focused on the Hellmarine, who stood at the head of the squad as they prepared the final ascent to the observation deck where they believed Sitri to be. Greer had checked the ship’s systems multiple times since they’d left Gray and Cox behind in the birthing chamber, confirming that Sitri appeared to be using the area to simply survey the battle.

As Cross and Serizawa relayed their orders and took their squads, Pierce signaled Palmer to come over.

“Alright, it’s going to be our job to hold this junction as a fallback point. No one but Stygians comes in or out. The Hellmarine will proceed up to the observation deck and finish the job,” he explained. “We have Ghenzul boarding, so we’re going to dig in.”

The ship suddenly lurched, and the lighting changed, causing everyone to freeze for a moment. There wasn’t anyone among them who didn’t connect the sudden disturbance with the Stygians they’d left behind to destroy the sophisticated Demon production facility.

“I’ve got Gray,” an unfamiliar voice said, emerging through the comms traffic. “I got him!”

Pierce turned to the side, listening to the individual for a moment before interrupting with his priority privileges. “What do you mean you have Gray? Who is this?”

“She’s one of mine,” Myraxia responded. “My fastest. I sent her ahead to try and help them out once the Queen hit the hull.”

“Queen?” Mandy repeated, stunned, her eyes darting up and down the corridors as if the creature would be on them at any moment.

“It’s dead now,” Gray rasped. “Cox is gone.”

Mandy hung her head, as did many of the others in the squad. Her eyes shifted toward Elora and Chambers, both of whom were closest to him in their own way. Cox had been vital in acclimating Elora to life on the Midnight Sea, while Chambers had been something of a light-hearted rival and companion in their shared thrill seeking. Neither of them showed any outward signs of emotion, but Mandy had access to the entire squad’s biometrics. She knew how hard it hit them, despite their composure.

“Have the vats been neutralized?” Pierce asked after a brief moment of silence.

“Yes, sir,” Gray responded, his voice still raspy.

“There are more Queens,” Myraxia interrupted. “Their ships are charging through the Demon lines, and they’ve got boarding parties with them. The hull is crawling with them around the upper decks.
